Wonderful celebrations are upon us, filled with family, friends, laughter, and love. Staying in good health is vital to enjoy life with the people you care about!
As we age or develop health conditions, it’s important to remember that even though it’s the holidays, routines are still important. Missing medications and putting healthy habits by the wayside can quickly take us out of the party scene.
Here are Five Tips to Maintain Your Health this Season:
1. Eat, Drink, & Be Merry
Be intentional about what’s on your plate and try to balance it. Taste and try things in smaller servings without sabotaging your hard work and good health.
Mix in the green veggies whenever possible. There’s no need to give up your favorites completely, but don’t forget to drink some water alongside what you’re having instead of a sugary beverage or one with alcohol.
Be cautious if you do choose to have a drink so you can stay alert and in control. Medications and alcohol can be unsafe. Consider double-checking with your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you’re unsure if you can have a drink.
2. Get Plenty of Rest & Relaxation
Whether you’re staying with family or they’re bunking at your house, be sure to get your sleep. Kiddos can be up super early, which can make for memorable little chats, but if you’re sleepy mid-day, try to nap if possible.
If you’re watching your grandchildren over the holidays, read them a bedtime story when you’re getting ready, and maybe it will work for them, too! Take opportunities to put your feet up and relax.
Holidays can be filled with hustle and bustle but be sure to do what fills your cup so you stay healthy. Make time to read a book, watch a holiday movie with your loved ones, or take deep breaths if you are stressed.
3. Make Time to Move
R+R is nice, but moving after sitting around is also good. Balance is the key to health. If the weather is nice, make time to go outside. Take a walk with your family (if the sidewalks are ice-free), or hike and admire the scenery.
If you’re indulging in sugar cookies and other starchy or carb-heavy foods, movement will do wonders for your belly. No one has time to pencil in a tummy ache or an extended trip to the bathroom over the holidays!
4. Remember Your Medications
When loved ones are around, and we live by their schedules or travel, forgetting important medications can be very easy. Set a timer to remind yourself or keep them somewhere in sight to remind you to take them. Be sure they’re securely closed to keep them out of little hands who might be curious, too.
If you have diabetes, set reminders for blood sugar checks and keep managing your condition. Getting off schedule and forgetting your needs can be an easy way to end up in the ER.
5. Wash Your Hands
Family, friends, and fellowship can bring on the germs. Cold winter air can also draw people into small spaces to stay warm. To remain in good health this season, practice good hand hygiene and consider getting a flu shot.
Celebrating the holidays is all about being together but be flexible if you’re sick or a loved one is ill. Consider rescheduling your occasion to another day when everyone feels up for it or plan a second celebration if necessary.
Those with compromised immune systems could take much longer to recuperate from a common illness than some youngsters. Staying healthy is anything but selfish, and most people don’t want their holiday gift to include sneezing or tummy issues. We wish you a healthy, happy holiday season!
